Wabi-Sabi

The Art of Imperfection,

IMG_0966.jpeg

After spending four decades immersed in the culture of Japan, Edwin Molenaar now shares his mastery of Japanese aesthetics through WabiSabi ERM. Having built a distinguished career designing for luxury hotels and discerning private clients across Japan, he has returned to Europe to bridge these two worlds. By collaborating directly with traditional Japanese artisans, Edwin crafts a harmonious blend of interior art, shodo, and wabi-sabi philosophy into every unique project. Today, Edwin invites you to explore the beauty of the imperfect through bespoke commissions. Whether you desire a bold cultural statement or a subtle hint of Zen for your home, he works personally with you to create something extraordinary. Every piece is hand-finished with care, ensuring that your custom artwork is an authentic, soulful reflection of the timeless Japanese spirit, tailored entirely for you.

Working from his studio in South Limburg, Netherlands, Edwin brings art to life with his own two hands. He uses only organic materials, carefully chosen for their natural feel and quality. This gentle, slow process ensures that every piece stays true to ancient Japanese traditions while offering a clean, modern aesthetic for your home.

ERM Wabi-Sabi

Philosophy

Wabi-sabi (わびさび) is the heart of Japanese aesthetics, an invitation to find wonder in the simple, the aging, and the beautifully incomplete. It is a warm embrace of life as it truly is. Wabi (Imperfection): Celebrating the soul of the handmade. It is found in the soft irregularities and unique textures that tell a story of human touch. Sabi (Impermanence): Honoring the passage of time. Like a gentle patina on wood, it reveals that there is deep dignity and grace in aging naturally. Unforced Simplicity: Focusing on organic materials like paper, stone, and clay to create a peaceful atmosphere that feels grounded and honest. Mindful Living: Shifting away from mass production toward meaningful objects that offer a quiet, soulful sanctuary for your modern home.

Embracing the Japanese wisdom of Wabi-sabi, WabiSabi ERM values the beauty in things that are natural and aged. Every handcrafted piece I create uses traditional methods and raw materials to show that true art is found in life's simple, honest imperfections. It is a slow, soulful process that turns nature into a unique art.

Amidst the uniform click of the machine and the rush of mass production, WabiSabi ERM serves as a quiet sanctuary for the soul. Unlike the clinical precision of the factory line, our works are born from a slow, rhythmic journey where time is a collaborator, not a constraint. We believe that true character resides in the whisper of a hand-hewn texture, the natural patina of age, and the honest marks of the maker’s touch that no engine can replicate. These creations are intentional pauses—vessels of serenity that bring the soulful, unhurried essence of Japanese heritage into your living space, inviting you to find profound beauty in the humble, the weathered, and the remarkably unique.

SOULFUL Creation ERM ORIGINAL

Shoji Character

A Shoji screen does more than just separate rooms; it gently opens them up to a new kind of light. Born from the heart of Japanese tradition, these handcrafted panels create a soft, breathing boundary that lets a home feel both private and connected. Through the translucent screen, sunlight is transformed into a warm, glowing hum that shifts with the passing hours, filling your space with a sense of peace and natural rhythm. Each frame is built with honest materials and intentional lines, focusing on the beauty of simplicity. For me, making a Shoji is about crafting a quiet atmosphere where you can slow down and truly feel the stillness. It is not just furniture, but a living bridge between light and shadow that invites a calm, soulful energy into your daily life.

 Shoji Cover

Crafted by hand from natural oak, this radiator cover transforms a functional element into a quiet design feature. Each slat is carefully shaped to maintain airflow while creating a refined rhythm in the wood.

A deep black pigment is worked into the oak, enhancing the grain rather than hiding it—preserving the natural structure and character of the material.

Behind the slats, a heat-resistant shoji-inspired cloth softly diffuses warmth and light, bringing balance between function, texture, and atmosphere.

Natural oak brings warmth and texture, while the concrete-look surfaces add a quiet, modern edge. Together, they create a balanced space—refined yet grounded.

“For my private space, Edwin created three calligraphies with the texts Ikigai, Kaizen, and Wabi-Sabi — concepts that serve as guiding principles in my life. He not only rendered them in a visually powerful way, but also made their essence and philosophy tangible in his work. The combination of craftsmanship, depth, and aesthetics gives these pieces lasting value in my daily life. Edwin has a unique ability to bring together art and meaning.”

Kotoba (言葉)

Hello Edwin, thanks again for the beautiful Wabi-Sabi. I still like the translation as well as the quality of the ink on the special paper. The paper stays nice and tight with the calligraphy.

Client Voices

“For the entrance of our movement studio, we were looking for something unique that conveys calm, quality, and identity. Edwin R. Molenaar translated this perfectly into a modern Japanese design, featuring a beautiful Ogi wall as the focal point. The result is an entrance that not only stands out visually, but also immediately sets the right atmosphere for our clients. Edwin works with great care, has a keen eye for detail, and knows how to seamlessly combine concept and execution. We receive compliments on it every day.”

The Acquisition Process

Personal Dialogue
Each piece begins in conversation. Edwin works closely with you to understand the quiet character of your space. From this exchange, a form emerges—guided by material, intention, and balance—resulting in a work that feels naturally at home.

Authenticity & Trace
Every creation carries its origin. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, and marked with the maker’s hanko, each hand-brushed shodō and crafted shoji frame holds the imprint of its making—honest, considered, and true.

Material & Time

Oak, washi, linen, other materials chosen in their most honest state.

They do not remain as they are.
Time moves through them quietly: light softens their tone, air shifts their surface, seasons leave their trace.

What fades, deepens. What changes, reveals.
These are not imperfections, but the gentle expression of life within the material.
